Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Latest News & Updates
Published on: 28th February, 2010
In the teleconference call yesterday, World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao said the following: “I believe I don’t really need to fight Mayweather because what I have actually done in boxing right now, I think is good enough for me.” But is Pacquiao’s career really complete if he doesn’t fight Mayweather? I really don’t think it is. Pacquiao fought few recognizable opponents from the start of his career until he fought Marco Antonio Barrera for the first time in 2003. By then, Pacquiao had been fighting for eight years and had won titles in the flyweight and super bantamweight divisions.
However, didn’t take on anyone worth mentioning until he fought a battle scared Barrera in 2003. By that time in Barrera’s career, he had been through two grueling wars against Erik Morales. Pacquiao stopped Barrera in the 11th round. After that fight, Pacquiao fought to a 12 round draw with Juan Manuel Marquez. Beyond that fight, Pacquiao fought two more bouts against Morales, another fight against Barrera, which wasn’t really needed given the one-sided first bout between them.
In 2008, Pacquiao won a controversial 12 round split decision over Marquez in a rematch, a fight in which many people still think Marquez won. Pacquiao never gave Marquez a rematch. Pacquiao fought David Diaz in 2008, but he wasn’t considered to be the best fighter in the lightweight division at the time. Pacquiao then fought and beat and old Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and then most recently Miguel Cotto.
Those wins were good. However, none of those fighters were considered to be the best in their divisions at the time that Pacquiao fought them. De La Hoya was old, Hatton was more or less shot, and Cotto still hadn’t looked the same after taking a terrifying beating at the hands of Antonio Margarito in 2008.
As such, I think even with a win over Joshua Clottey, Pacquiao’s next opponent for March 13th, he needs a win over Floyd Mayweather Jr. to ensure he has a lasting legacy. The wins over Diaz, Barrera, Morales (who beat Pacquiao in their first fight), Marquez (a questionable draw and a controversial win), De La Hoya, Hatton and Cotto just aren’t enough in my view to make me think that Pacquiao’s career is complete.
He just doesn’t have enough wins over fighters that were truly considered to be the very best in their weight divisions for me to see Pacquiao’s legacy as a shining one. Hatton, Cotto, Morales, Barrera and the questionable win over Marquez just isn’t enough.
Pacquiao needs to give a rematch to Marquez, still fight Mayweather and ideally Shane Mosley for me to even consider Pacquiao as a great fighter. Without wins over those fighters, then I see Pacquiao as merely a good fighter but not a great one. Unless Pacquiao can find his way into and out of those fights without losing, then I don’t rate Pacquiao as one of the best fighters of all time. I see Pacquiao as having lost to Marquez twice, and I think Mayweather and Mosley would likely beat Pacquiao as well if given the chance.

To the writer – Pacquiao’s legacy in boxing is already sealed. Pacquaio said it himself, he doesn’t need to fight Mayweather. Pacquiao doesn’t need Mayweather. Mayweather needs Pacquiao. Mayweather is P4P no. 2. Mosley is P4P No.3 – whoever wins, Pacquaio retains his No. 1 P4P ranking. Get it?
@Esteban Garduno
So you are saying Mayweather is bigger than De La Hoya, Cotto, Hatton, Diaz, Marquez, Barrera, Morales, Larios, Julio altogether. You are saying if Pacquiao did not fight Mayweather, those fights with other boxers don’t mean a thing?
Here’s a quote from another site that I agree with.
“I am one of those people who said to myself, ‘Just take the damn test.’ But after giving it some thought, I realize Pacquiao is also human. He wants to be at his best when he fights probably his toughest fight yet. He doesn’t want to go into the ring feeling frail or even just at 90%. He wants to give us the best show, with him at 100%. He is human because he has a weakness.”
“Floyd is human too because he can’t help being scared of losing his undefeated record. BUT THE PROBLEM WITH FLOYD IS THAT HE NEEDED PACQUIAO TO ADJUST TO HIM TO MAKE HIM COMPLETE.”
Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao holds the world record 7 world titles in 7 different weight divisions. He is awarded the rare Fighter of the Decade (2000-2009). Awarded for 3 times along with Ali and Holyfield the prestigious Fighter of the Year Award. He is the world’s Pound for Pound king. And a sure future Hall of Famer. He is awarded by Time Magazine in its 100 Most influential people. He is the first Asian athlete to be featured on the renowned news magazine. This I believe makes Pacman’s career complete. Fighting boxers that the writer wants doesn’t make a boxer great. The world and all the boxing fans already sealed Pacquiao’s legacy.
Pacquiao, who now transcends boxing, was on the cover of Time Magazine and named one of the 100 most influential, will not be complete if he doesn’t fight the #1 pound for pound punk in in today’s world of boxing, who is notorious for ducking all of the tough fighters in his class for years? (while Manny fought bigger renowned fighters out there)
What a laughable crock! He does not need Chicken Mayweather to cement his legacy. The fighter of the decade, which included chicken Mayweather’s decade, is so far above that low life punk and his low life convict druggie dad, that he should just ignore him until the Chicken goes down on his hands and knees and begs for a title shot!
actually the author is right and theyre alot of boxing experts that would say that his wins werent too significant. And for the diehard pacman fans that are sticking by his side for him refusing a simple blood test 14 days before the fight you disgust me. Pacquiao has been recorded numerous times saying he didnt want to take a blood test before the fight and when one smart newscaster asked him but mayweather said 14 days not the day of the fight… pacquiaos english seemed to suddenly suck more…
You pacman fans need to stop justifying what pacquiao is doing to the sport of boxing by refusing a understandable demand for mayweather and boxing fans to take a teaspoon blood test. There should be no doubt that if mayweather and pacquiao fight that they are both clean for no doubt. And thats a big if if you pacman fans keep up with these stupid defenses
just FYI, im a pacman and mayweather fan, everyone is right, pacquiao already destroyed good opponents but his legacy would be 100% complete if he fights mayweather but like BOOMER and JOHN T said that pacquiao is human he has a weakness , its absolutely true plus he is No. 1 p4p so SOUTHPAW TRUTH get off mayweathers dick ur not even close to being right
by the way, southpaw truth pacman has more fans than mayweather and pacmans fans are smarter so F”” off and deal with it, everyone sees mayweather as a coward , but just leave this website or just die because how dumber can u get? oh and one thing for sure F”’ the writer of this article, he dont know anything either.
Everyone said pacman would get beat over and over then he kills the competition so the same people make excuses why he destroys…
A fight would make pacmans career more solid but it’s not possible if mayweather is scared. Now ‘money’ may is demanding a bigger cut of the purse (when clearly he does not deserve it) and random blood testing all the way up to the fight. So scared. It’s insane what people will say or do to duck a fight. Listen to roach and do a winner take all!!
@Southpaw dumb
in blood testing they will not get a teaspoon of blood, they will take one vial of blood every test. so if its random blood testing the blood that they will take will be not just a teaspoon of blood or a vial of blood it will more than that. so how can you fight 100% if lots of blood where taken from you during your training days?.. and how can mayweather ask that kind of blood testing which pacquiao was never been reported of taking PEDS or having a positive result on PEDS?.. when pacquiao imposed those 10million for every lbs if mayweather weighs over the 147lbs, pacquiao has the right to do that coz mayweather did weigh over to his fight with marquez and marquez ended like a shit.. so i think mayweather has no basis on his demand. while pacquiao has.
Listen southpaw truth, the Mayweather’s were simply bothered to fight Pacman. We assume that team Mayweather knew they have a sure win against Pacman, because of Floyd physical advantage, defensive skills and fighting styles, but they knowingly cannot rule out any idea that they might lose. Mayweather Sr. saw this when Pacman KO’d his fighter Ricky Hatton. Then came Pacman dominance and KO over Cotto. This made them doubted more the idea of their sure win against Pacman. Remember that Floyd is so concerned over his 40-0-0 record. He is just so afraid to lose. The Mayweather’s next move then was to place an issue on Pacman’s head to ruin his credibility and using it to Floyd’s advantage.
The drug testing issue should not be Pacquiao’s concern. The NSAC is in charge of that. Since the NSAC does not require random blood testing, it is just proper for Manny not to submit to it. Any blood testing requirements outside the NSAC rules will now then be negotiated and agreed by both fighters through a contract. This is what Manny Pacquiao did. Manny offered an unlimited random urine tests and a blood testing extractions on three ocasions, first during a kick off press conference, second 24 days before the fight and third right after fight night. At any rate, Pacman can be detected of any PED considering the frequency of the tests. It is clear therefore that Manny did not avoided or refuse any blood tests as claimed by Mayweather’s camp and southpaw truth.
Lastly, in case everyone has forgotten, Manny is the welterweight champ in this fight, he is the number one pound for pound king. Mayweather is only a challenger. Floyd cannot just impose any demands on anybody the champ can. But Manny did not overdo it, he is very humble even he made history by making 7 world titles in 7 different weight divisions.
Likewise pac fans does not justify any of Pacquiao’s doings, his records can speak for itself. And all the boxing fans and the world bares witness to this.
